Banarasi Sarees in Australia

A Banarasi saree is the one that gets handed down. Woven in Varanasi with real zari thread, it has the weight, the shine and the detailed border that makes it a wedding staple across South Asia.

What Makes a Banarasi

The weave. Fine silk threads worked with gold or silver zari, usually in Mughal-influenced patterns: floral vines, paisleys and a detailed border with a heavier pallu at the end. A real Banarasi feels substantial in your hand and the reverse side shows the float threads of the design. The Banarasi sari holds a Geographical Indication tag in India, which protects the name.

Caring for It

Dry clean only. Store it folded in a cotton cloth or a muslin bag, never plastic, and keep it out of direct light. Refold it a different way once a year so the zari does not crack along the same crease. Done properly, this saree outlasts you.
