A 60-Second Glossary
Saree listings use a few terms that trip people up. Here's what they mean.
- Blouse piece (or unstitched blouse)
- A piece of matching fabric, usually about 80 cm, sold with the saree. You take it to a tailor. It is not a blouse yet.
- Readymade blouse (or stitched blouse)
- A finished blouse in a set size. You can wear it the day it arrives.
- Margin or "adjustable to"
- Extra fabric left in the side seams, so a tailor can let the blouse out one size. Valampuri lists many blouses this way, for example "36 (Adjustable to 38)".
- Stretchable blouse
- Made from a stretch fabric like lycra or stretch velvet. Forgiving if you're between sizes.
- Fall and pico (or fall and edging)
- A fabric strip stitched inside the saree's lower hem so it drapes and wears better, and a finished edge on the raw sides. Usually a small extra charge.
- Ready-to-wear or pre-draped saree
- A saree with the pleats already stitched. You wrap it and fasten it in a couple of minutes. Good if you've never draped one.
- Petticoat (or underskirt)
- The fitted skirt worn under the saree. The pleats tuck into it. You need one.

- Binks (getbinks.com). A big range of "FlexiFit" readymade blouses, 1,234 in stock. But prices show in Indian rupees even after choosing Australia (₹2,100 to ₹5,700), shipping is worked out at checkout, and customs charges are yours to pay. [13]

- Amazon Australia. Plenty of listings, but they come from many different sellers, so sizing, quality and returns change from one listing to the next. Check each seller.
How to Measure Yourself for a Readymade Blouse
- Bust. Measure around the fullest part, wearing the bra you'll wear with the saree. Keep the tape level. That number, in inches, is roughly your blouse size.
- Under-bust. Measure just under the bust. Blouses sit close here, so it helps you choose between two sizes.
- Shoulder. Measure across your back from one shoulder point to the other. Check it against the size chart if one is given.
- Between two sizes? Go up one and have it taken in, or pick a stretchable blouse or one with margin.
- Check the length. Most readymade blouses finish just below the bust. If you prefer more coverage, look for a longer or "full coverage" style.
